Breaking the Silence: Why Mental Health Awareness in Schools Matters

In India, 1 in 7 adolescents faces mental health challenges — yet most suffer in silence. Especially in
government and rural schools, students often deal with anxiety, stress, and depression without
understanding what they’re going through.
At Shivekha Foundation, we believe the classroom is the best place to start the conversation.
Why Schools?
Students spend most of their time in school — a place that shapes their minds and emotions. But
while schools teach math and science, they rarely teach students how to manage stress, sadness, or
self-doubt.
This gap can have serious effects: low confidence, poor performance, and long-term emotional
struggles.
What We Do
Through our interactive mental health workshops, we:
• Normalize conversations about feelings
• Teach basic coping tools
• Train teachers to spot early signs
• Encourage peer and parent support
One student told us after a session:
“Now I know I’m not alone — and I’m not weak for feeling this way.”
That’s the power of awareness.
The Ripple Effect
When one child understands mental health, they influence their classmates, family, and future
community. It’s a small step with a lifelong impact.
